Regular check-up
As soon as your children develop teeth, it is important to visit a dentist every 6 months. This means that by the time your child is 2 years old, they should definitely have had their first dental checkup.
Many people don’t realise that the baby teeth are just as important as the adult teeth as they allow children to chew and speak properly and prepare the mouth for the permanent teeth. Many baby teeth need to be kept until around 12 years old and daily care is needed to maintain them.

Fissure sealants
Sometimes children may need extra help looking after their first adult teeth.
All our teeth have natural pits, grooves and fissures. Most of the back teeth have deeper fissures which can trap small food particles when eating. If the fissures are deep and narrow, the toothbrush bristles wont’ be able to reach inside and clean thoroughly. In these cases, the back teeth will easily become decayed and the fissures may appear black.
Fissure sealants are used to protect the teeth by filling in the deep pits, grooves or fissures before they become decayed, allowing a smoother surface for easier cleaning. This treatment is completely painless and non-invasive with no drilling in the preparation of the tooth. The filling material is tooth-coloured.
Fissure sealants are simple to place in adults and children alike, but often, after the 1st permanent molars have erupted around 7 years of age, it is a good time to protect these adult teeth before they decay as the child is still learning how to brush their back teeth effectively.
