General Dentistry

It is recommended to schedule a checkup and cleaning at least twice a year, or every six months, to maintain optimal dental health and oral hygiene.

If your dentist identifies any particular issues in the teeth or gums, they may advice more frequent visits until the condition is stabilised.

Key Benefits
Key Benefits of Regular Dental Visits:
  • Prevent Gum Disease: If plaque accumulates on the teeth for long enough, the infection can cause irreversible damage to the surrounding gums and bone. Once the bone is lost, there is no way to “fix” this and eventually will progress to pain and loss of the tooth. Our dentists can reach the places which can be missed or are difficult to clean during daily brushing and flossing.

  • Maintain Oral Health: Good oral health is fundamental in keeping your teeth as long as possible, especially if you already have gum disease.

  • Avoiding Surprises: Regular check-ups reduce the likelihood of unexpected dental pain and emergency appointments.

  • Save Money: Early detection of small problems can prevent complex and costly major dental treatments.

  • Prevent Bad Breath: Poor oral health can cause bad breath (halitosis). It can also cause problems with the throat, tongue, and other soft tissue infections. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are the best way to make sure that you are maintaining good oral hygiene.

  • Boost Confidence: A whiter, brighter smile can significantly enhance your confidence!

  • Overall Wellbeing: Oral health is linked to overall health. Heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are among the health issues which have been linked to gum disease. Regular oral examinations may help identify health problem in its early stages.

Comprehensive Checkup

During your check up at My Eastwood Dentist, our dentists will conduct a comprehensive examination of your entire mouth. They will evaluate the health of your teeth, gums, lips, tongue, palate, jaws, and any dental appliances you may use. This thorough assessment takes place before, during, and after your teeth cleaning. Although it may not take long, rest assured that every surface is meticulously checked to detect any issues early, allowing you to make informed decisions about your treatment plan.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

Professional teeth cleaning involves the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth. This is done by a combination of ultrasonic scaling and polishing.

Professional Teeth cleaning

Ultrasonic Scaling

Once plaque is left long enough, it hardens into calculus which cannot be removed by brushing alone. Safe removal requires ultrasonic scaling by a dental professional to prevent enamel damage. Ultrasonic scaling uses high-frequency waves and water to break down and remove plaque, stains, and calculus. While this procedure can be sensitive for patients with gum disease or recession, it is gentle, effective and crucial for maintaining oral health. Never attempt to scratch off calculus yourself, as damaging the enamel significantly weakness and compromises the tooth!

We also provide professional cleaning for dentures.

Polishing

Polishing effectively removes extrinsic stains on your teeth caused by smoking, tea, coffee, and other foods and drinks. This is achieved using prophy paste and a small, soft rubber cup, similar to an electric toothbrush. Many patients enjoy this painless procedure which leaves your teeth feeling smooth and shiny once the plaque is removed.

At My Eastwood Dentist, we are equipped with a specialised equipment for severe stains called the Propy Jet. This air polishing system delivers a precise pressurised air-powder-water mixture to remove even the most stubborn stains.

Fluoride Application

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel, protects against tooth decay, prevents small cavities from worsening, and even reverse early decay. During your dental check-up and cleaning at My Eastwood Dentist, we typically apply a fluoride treatment directly onto your teeth. After application, you will need to avoid rinsing, drinking or eating for 30 mins, but this simple treatment can make a significant improvement to your oral health by reducing the risk of decay!

Dental X-rays

During your dental consult, your dentist may need to do an X-ray to see more than what is visible in the mouth. In the past, x-rays were mainly used for diagnosing problems. These days, the standard of care is to use x-rays as a part of the examination so that a thorough assessment of the teeth can be made to prevent unwanted surprises and more complex problems in the future.

At My Eastwood Dentist, our state-of-the-art technology allows us to take x-rays in a safe environment with minimal exposure to radiation, and instant processing time. The image of your teeth will appear on the screen in front of you and our dentist will go through any relevant findings in the same consult.

Did you know that the radiation exposure from taking a dental x-ray in our surgery is no more than from eating 10 bananas or sitting on an aeroplane!

Fissure Sealant

All teeth have natural pits, grooves, and fissures. Back teeth, in particular, often have deeper fissures that can trap food particles. If these fissures are deep and narrow, toothbrush bristles cannot reach in and thoroughly clean them, leading to decay and a blackened appearance.

Fissure sealants are used to protect the teeth by filling these deep pits, grooves or fissures before they become decayed. This prevents food from getting stuck and makes the surface smoother, allowing for easier cleaning with a toothbrush.

Fissure sealants are simple to place in adults and children alike, but often, after the 1st permanent molars erupt around 7 years of age, it is an ideal time to protect these adult teeth before they decay as the child is still learning how to brush their back teeth effectively.

This is a quick and easy procedure which allows for eating and resumption of all activities immediately. It is completely conservative, meaning there is no drilling of the teeth or removal of any tooth structure, and is therefore completely painless. Not all children nor all teeth need this treatment, but our dentist will identify high-risk teeth that need fissure sealants, ensuring personalised care based on specific needs of each patient.

Fillings

Fillings

Fillings serve multiple purposes, including repairing holes in damaged, decayed, chipped, broken, or worn teeth. They can also be used to close gaps between teeth or alter their shape. At My Eastwood Dentist, we primarily use tooth-coloured fillings and our dentists meticulously match the filling to the perfect shade of white of your teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural look.

To prepare the tooth, our dentist may need to remove any decay using a drill. Depending on the depth of the cavity and your preference, a local anesthetic may be used to numb the area for your comfort.

Overall, fillings are a straightforward procedure, carefully executed to restore the health and aesthetics of your smile.
