Root Canal Treatment
(AKA RCT or endodontic treatment)
Do you have severe tooth pain, a dull throb, spontaneous pain, or an abscess on your gums? There’s a chance it may be damage or infection in the nerve.
Infection of the nerve may be caused by a deep cavity, trauma (bumping your teeth or biting on something very hard), a crack in the tooth, extreme wear from grinding or deep existing fillings.
Once the nerve has been affected, the tooth will either need extraction or root canal treatment. In most cases, it would be preferable to save the tooth, because placing an artificial tooth will always just be a substitute for the stronger, better functioning natural tooth.
The good news is that root canal treatment is an effective way of saving the tooth, and in a vast majority of cases, your toothache will be alleviated immediately after the first visit.
The number of nerves requiring treatment depend on which tooth is undergoing RCT.
The root canal treatment procedure will usually take 1-3 visits depending on the amount of infection. For your comfort, we will use local anaesthetics to numb the area at the beginning of the appointment. Sheet of plastic will be used to isolate the tooth. The nerves inside the tooth will be removed, medication will be placed and eventually, the nerve space will be filed up to minimise the risk of further bacterial infiltration.
Once the root canal treatment is completed, an artificial crown will be placed to protect the tooth.
